Meteora May 27th

As we drove into Kalambaka our spot for the night we were enthralled by the massive mountain monoliths on the approach. They rise from flat surface of the valley, perpendicular in their ascent. Atop these peaks are many monasteries, some now uninhabited . We visited two the following day and viewed from  the balcony of the hotel one could imagine that access wouldd be by helicopter only. However, our trusty driver wound his way up the peak to a flat surface on top where there were, of course many other your buses parked.
On the approach!
Up close!

Andrew did make it to the top !!
After a visit to one of the churches where the guide held up the row of other tourists with his lengthy descriptions of the minute of the icons (they were quite beautiful but an appreciative glimpse would have sufficed), we had a few minutes to pause and admire the view and marvel at the construction of the buildings. Apparently, materials were hauled up by net and a pulley.
The pulley used to haul up goods!
Soon we were on our way to Athens with a quick stop outside the city to see the statues of Leonidis, the King of Sparta to commerate the battle of Thermopolaye.
Andrew's re-enactment!!
