Nafplio and Mycenae

This morning, 24th May we visited another archaeological site at Mycenae which is the birthplace of the culture that dominated  during the Bronze Age.  First there was the citadel with its Cyclopean walls,  made from huge limestone boulders which thecpeople at the time thought were made by Cyclops as they would have been impossible for humans to move. However, move they did, with various forms of block and tackle!!

On to the region of Nrmea to visit a winery where we had a tasting and discovered our preferred reds and whites, their grape variety and source.
We were hankering to  the hotel for a break and to enjoy a relax by the pool before our visit to Nafplio at 4.30 - but our guide decided we needed to stop at a restaurant for lunch, when a snack would have been preferable. However, we believe the kick back was the issue!! And of course, he decided that we would start our next visit at 4.00 rather than 4.30 - several moans from the group!
We did enjoy the brief down time and took to the pool for exercise, joined by two other Victorian couples also craving exercise!!
We had a late afternoon stroll in Nafplio and as the pace was so slow, we said we would like to explore on our own, and meet at an appointed time at the next venue! He was not happy with that as he wanted to describe the buildings and show us the shops where he suggested we should buy up big and support the Greek economy!? Enough, we escaped after 30 minutes and had a lovely hour on our own not being 'talked at' and finished up with a coffee at a waterside Cafe, enjoying the local buzz of the late Saturday afternoon socialising at the harbour. 
Nafplio is a very pretty town with architecture in the Venetian  style   and Barrow lanes draped with bougainvillea.

We finished the evening with a very jolly cooking class a d a lovely dinner, topped off with a delicious cake for the birthday of one of the group.

Hagia Sophia

The famous Hagia Sophia was built in the earlier Byzantine (Christian ) era and was destroyed by the invading Ottomans and later by the earthquake of 1346. It was restored by Mehmed the Conquerer in 1357 and converted to a mosque. There are many frescoes dating from the Byzantine period in evidence adding to the splendour of this magnificent building which words alone fail to describe. Hagia Sophia - some interior photos to follow. Evidence of Christian period. Our visit to this cultural magnificence was followed by something more mundane - a turkish delight and baklava tasting! What a selection and so delicious!! The generous sampling satisfied us as lunch and then we went to see the underground cisterns huch were the original water storage facilities and vaste!! Middleton by Youlgreave 7th -21st June

Settled in on the Saturday and on Sunday took our first walk to the next village-  Youlgreave . There is a footpath all the way which makes for easy dry walking. In the afternoon we felt a bit more adventurous and took to the recommended walk from the village. First part was on a path and dry, despite the occasional shower but then we were directed oner the fields first part OK  but then we walked through knee high very wet grass, through a field with very curious but friendly horses and finally back on the road. By that stage we were wet through - so no more fields of grass after rain! On the Monday we visited Bakewell and Buxton. On the road to Bakewell, we were following a fast tractor pulling a horse/cow/farm animal box, heading for the market. When we got close to town we saw many, many such vehicles parked as it was the livestock market!!
