Olympia and Nafpaktos 25tg May.
We bade farewell to our lovely hotel Amalia en route to Olympia, just as the rain clouds started to threaten,. A few showers on the way but it had cleared by the time we reached the site. This some the home of the first zo
Olympic games was vaste with good story boards which we referred to when the guide overloaded on the gods!!
On the starting block, although technically, athletes stood behind the block to start the race!
The spot where the flame is lit.
Some more photos from the site.
The gate through which the athletes entered the stadium.
This was an organised sporting/athletic complex with practice runs and gymnasia. Remnants of each can be seen.
We were escorted to the restaurant for lunch, but escaped to the village and had a delightful snack and walk around.
This cute sign caught my attention!!
We visited the Temple of Zeus, Palestrina and Phidias's workshop and later the museum packed with various statues of the gods.
We satisfied our curiosity with the detailed story boards and escaped to the pretty museum garden for a coffee.
In the afternoon we drove via Patras and over the Rio-Antrio suspension bridge - the longest in Greece and built for the 204 games which our guide cheekily said were the best ever, only to be contradicted by the Sydney folk in our group!!
We arrived in the harbour town if Nafpaktos late in the afternoon, enough time for a walk to the rown before dinner at a seafront restaurant. Interesting fir us, this is the ancient city of Lepanto where the famous sea battle took place between the Ottomans and the Crusaders. There is no museum to commerate the battle but our hotel receptionist told us that on the first weekend in October a re-enactment sea battle is staged.
The charming harbour at Nafpaktos.
